Starting Where You Are – A Personal Leadership Retreat

Date: October 19-21, 2012

Location: Cascade Lodge, Whistler, BC

There are many ways to get to any destination. One thing is certain. You must start from where you are. This two-day personal leadership retreat will help you define, understand and develop leadership from your own perspective, starting from exactly where you are in your life right now.

  • What does it mean to lead in your life and work?
  • What qualities and attributes define you as a leader, or potential leader, in the many roles you hold – at work, home or in the community? How is this different from conventional notions of leadership?
  • What tools are essential in the leader’s toolkit?
  • How can you grow your personal leadership muscles and at the same time take care of your most important leadership asset – yourself?

In a beautiful resort-retreat environment, join our team on a weekend journey to explore these dimensions of personal leadership and add new skills to your repertoire. At the same time, you’ll be given plenty of downtime to relax and reflect. Our wellness crew will be on hand to offer massage or Reiki sessions or you can simply choose to enjoy the amenities that one of the world’s finest resort communities has to offer. Private coaching and consulting sessions will also be available.

Follow your heart. See where it leads.

9:00 am – 9:45 am – Keynote TBA

9:45 am – 10:30 am – Defining Personal Leadership
Presenter: Vicki McLeod
Many people shy away from leading or lead unskilfully based on a conventional understanding of the leadership role. This session explores the difference between personal and positional leadership and will challenge you to redefine leadership on your own terms based on personal values and intrinsic individual qualities. What does it mean to be the CEO of your own life? What does it mean to take ownership of your job or position in the community? This session will give you a deeper understanding and definition of personal leadership and the impact you want to have.

10:30 am – Break

10:45 am – 11:30 am – Speak and Win
Presenter: Steven Hughes
Having an impact means engaging, inspiring and often persuading others. Whether presenting on stage, in the boardroom, at a school PAC meeting, or simply inviting others to join your cause or project, effective communication is key.  Steven is the author of Speak and Win and will share his tips and tools for powerful public speaking, presenting, persuading and informing.

11:30 am – 12:15 pm – Online Influence: Using Social Media to Lead Change
Presenters: Vicki McLeod & Lori Graham
Did you know that one in every nine people on Earth is on Facebook? Social media is a powerful tool to create change, build community and influence outcomes. No leader’s toolbox is complete without it. This session will focus on how to create positive impact through the mindful use of social media personally and professionally. You will gain greater insight into the impact of social media as a tool for change and ways to use it to create influence and build trust.

12:15 pm – 1:00 pm – Catered Light Lunch

1:00 pm – 1:45 pm – Building Reputation Through Writing & Publishing
Workshop led by: Steven Hughes

He’s been there, done that. In addition to being the author of Speak and Win, Steven is the entrepreneurial co-founder of Hughes Boys Media, who published his book. Steven will share his experience in writing and publishing and the importance of a book in taking your influence to the next level. Learn how to get your ideas into publishable form to build audience, influence and impact. Get your message out into the world.

1:45 pm – 2:30 pm – You Are What You Do: Self-Care for Leaders
Presenter: Catherine Burns
You are your most important asset. Leaders at home and work tend to focus on the needs of others and on achieving outcomes, taking less care of themselves and often minimizing the role of wellbeing. It is critical to take time to reflect and re-energize, and ask: Who are you being while you’re doing what you’re doing? Catherine will take you through self-care for the mind, body and soul of the leader in you.

2:30 pm – 3:00 pm – Day 1 Closing Session

3:00 pm – Free Time to Practice Self Care or Book a Private Coaching or Wellness Session

7:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Saturday Salon – If you’re inclined, join our presenters for a relaxed informal Q & A and discussion exploring the themes covered during our sessions.  Bring your own beverage, burning questions, insights and ideas.
